Pregnant & Powerful: FCA’s Support Network for Long Island’s Young Mothers

In the heart of Hempstead, New York, something powerful is happening.

Behind the quiet strength of a young mother balancing bottles, books, and big dreams is a community ready to lift her up — not just with essentials, but with encouragement, advocacy, and opportunities.

At FCA (Family & Children’s Association), our PACT (Parents and Children Together) program is built to serve teens and young adults who are navigating pregnancy, parenting, and the challenges in between.

Whether it’s a first-time mom looking for diapers, a teen hoping to finish school, or a young woman determined to rewrite her future — we meet them where they are, with what they need.

Born From Community Need

The PACT program began in direct response to what we saw in the surrounding communities of Nassau County: a growing number of young people, particularly teens, facing the realities of early pregnancy without the resources, support, or guidance they deserve. Vulnerable and too often overlooked, these youth weren’t just at risk — they were being left behind.

So we stepped in — not just with supplies, but with a system of care.

What Makes PACT Different?

Unlike programs that only step in after a crisis, PACT takes a full-spectrum approach to support. We work with youth ages 10–21 who are at risk of unprotected sexual activity, currently pregnant, or parenting — and we begin with prevention, education, and trust.

Through workshops, short-term counseling, advocacy, and referrals, we’re not just offering services — we’re building relationships.

We create spaces where young people can talk, learn, and grow — and where young mothers can connect, not just with staff, but with each other.

From Essentials to Empowerment

When someone comes to FCA, they get more than just diapers — though we offer those too.

They receive:

  • Active Parenting and educational classes
  • Workshops that promote self-awareness and skill-building
  • Connections to entitlements and public benefits
  • Socialization with other teen moms — to build peer support
  • Access to essentials like cribs, strollers, and more

But perhaps more importantly, they get a message that can change everything:

You are not alone — and help is closer than you think.

A Story of Strength

One young woman came to us unsure if college was even an option. Today, she’s enrolled in a nursing program, working part-time, and raising her son with confidence. She even bought her own car. Her success wasn’t just a result of ambition — it was the result of support.

That’s what FCA does. We see potential, and we stand beside it

“Before I found PACT, I felt like I was doing everything alone. I didn’t know where to turn or who to trust. But the team at FCA didn’t just help me. They believed in me. They listened, they showed up, and they reminded me that being a young mom doesn’t mean giving up on your future. PACT helped me feel powerful again.”Client, age 19

Her story is one of many, and it’s why we do what we do. At FCA’s PACT program, we’re not just supporting young mothers — we’re walking with them, every step of the way.
