Nassau County is among the U.S. Communities “going gray” the fastest, according to U.S. Census and multiple studies. The growth rate for the over-55 year old population in Nassau County is 6-times greater than our overall population, and the median age of county residents exceeds that of the state and nation. The aging population represents a growing proportion of residents facing anxiety, depression, and suicide; alcoholism; misuse of prescription drugs; and isolation from help. Many people feel ashamed to ask for help. Asking for help is a sign of strength and empowerment on the road to feeling better. Don’t let stigma and fear interfere with making changes that will have a positive impact on your life.
The first step is to identify how you are feeling and know that there is help available. Depression and anxiety is not a normal part of aging. If you are struggling with feelings of sadness, anxiety, and loneliness you do not have to struggle alone. Isolating yourself prevents you from feeling better and often creates a cycle of feeling negative and hopeless. Reach out to friends, family, neighbors, and supportive organizations. FCA is proud to support individuals in the Nassau County community and to help you connect with available resources. The FCA LinkAge Project is a triple partnership between Family and Children’s Association (FCA) Central Nassau Guidance (CNG) and the Nassau County Office for the Aging. We focus on addressing mental health needs for adults 55+ years old by providing a blend of supportive counseling and intensive case management. Our goal is to connect clients to long-term resources to enable living independently with a focus on improving overall quality of life.
The quality of your mental health affects every aspect of your life. It is important to utilize techniques to maintain your mental health and to reach out for additional support. The mind-body connection is how your body reacts to your thinking. A negative or positive mindset can influence your physical health. Take the first step, reach out for support and start to feel better today!
